Intelligence division

Machine Learning Engineer

Take a model from a notebook to something a field officer uses on Monday, and stays responsible for it afterwards.

Location
Dar es Salaam
Type

Level
Mid to senior
Closes

You would join the Intelligence division, working on systems where the model is one component of something larger: a registry, a monitoring platform, a decision-support tool used daily by people who are not data scientists.

Most of our problems have no published local baseline, so you will be deciding the method rather than implementing someone else's. You will also be measuring it honestly, which occasionally means reporting that it did not work.

The role involves travel within Tanzania. You will meet the people who use what you build.

What you would do

01Own a model end to end: framing, data, training, validation, deployment and monitoring.
02Design and run validation against local data, and publish the measurement honestly.
03Work directly with client staff to understand the decision the model supports.
04Write the documentation and runbooks that let the client operate it after handover.
05Contribute to the research line when no proven local method exists.

What we are looking for

01Strong Python, and comfort with the full lifecycle rather than notebooks alone.
02Practical experience training and validating models on messy real-world data.
03Ability to explain a method and its limits to a non-technical audience.
04Judgement about when a simpler approach is the right one.
05Formal qualifications are welcome; demonstrated work matters more.
Compensation

Competitive, reviewed at six months. [demo]

Next step

Tell us the decision that is going wrong.

Not the technology you think you need. The decision, who makes it, and on what evidence. We will tell you plainly whether there is a system in it.
